A trip to St. John's requires going up Signal Hill, a national historic site. Being a latent history buff, I was keen to read every info board and plaque. Newfoundland's history makes Vancouver seem like a toddler. Seeing St. John's from up high, it's easy to imagine the isolation and hardship indigenous and immigrant folks experienced 500+ years ago.
The Harbour is much smaller than I imagined.
Caroline is trying to shield herself from the wind. It was blowing people's glasses off. Bit chilly, but what a view.
There is much less mention of aboriginal peoples on this coast, so far. I don't like that.
Have you read The River Thieves by Michael Crummey? About the Beothuk and the settlers. One of many great Newfoundland novels!
